Every month

Every month I'll post a new "taste" of Art Pepper's music as a FREE DOWNLOAD. These tastes are given away because they are "unreleasable" by virtue of the recording being cut off at beginning or end or by brief audio problems that occurred in the recording process.

THEY'RE TOO STUNNING TO HIDE AWAY IN MY FILES AS YOU'LL SOON SEE.

I'll also post occasional journal entries including updates on new releases.

First Draft of Art Pepper's "My Friend John"

John Snyder, Billy Higgins, Charlie Haden, Art Pepper, George Cables

With Rocco's help, I've been scanning all Art's sheet music. I thought some musician fans might find this interesting. The Freebie today is an unreleased track from the Artists House date at Kendun Recorders in L.A. in '79 with Art, George Cables, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins. It was recorded by John Snyder, for whom this song was written in 1977. John sponsored Art's first ever East Coast tour which wound up at the Village Vanguard, and Art wrote the tune for this date. I'm including 4 pages of music: The original ms, which Art scrawled during his cocaine nights sitting on bathroom floors of our hotel rooms in NY and Boston (read the book!). And the revised alto part. Art said that this chart and some others he wrote during that time were just too hard to play, so he rewrote them.

  2. Laurie, thnx for sharing. I`m still wondering wether it would be feasible to (re)release Art`s complete Artists House sessions

I believe these saw the light of day in it`s entirety only via the Art Pepper Galaxy Box Set - and although (or even because ?) the forementioned Box (being out of print nowadays) features a wealth of music, the Artists House sessions somehow fell under the radar.

I`m positive this would be a very interesting rerelease for a lot of (old and new) Art Pepper followers.

    Keep up your good work
    Emil

    1. I've been thinking about it. There are alternates from these dates that are still unreleased, I think. I might make them available for high-quality downloads complete with some of the original Artwork, but can't afford to release them on CD AND also release previously unreleased material.

  3. Hi Laurie, this is Fredrik. I'm a jazz collector from Stockholm Sweden. One of my all time favourite jazz artists is Art Pepper and I just love his early stuff. I collect only original 1st pressing jazz vinyl collectibles. I have just bought a 1st original pressing of his great album "Modern Art" on the Intro label. Fantastic album, great cool jazz. I intend to by a lot more early collectible Art Pepper LP's in the future. I've read "Straight Life" and was blown away. Very interesting reading indeed. And a great discography as well. This is the first time I've come across this blog and I'll explore it further. I have my own blog about my jazz vinyl collecting, visit it here: http://www.1139indearoldstockholm.com

    Cheers!
    Fredrik
